#Radioactive Sewage Sludge and Slag in Tokyo

It was big news when the radioactive sewage sludge and slag were found in Fukushima Prefecture earlier this month (see my posts here, here and here).

And it is almost no news when the highly radioactive (170,000 becquerels per kilogram) sewage slag was found in TOKYO, and the slag's been already sold as construction materials.

Here's a report from a week ago by Nippon Television (3;48PM JST 5/13/2011):

東京都の下水処理施設から出た汚泥の焼却灰から、一キロあたり17万ベクレルという高濃度の放射性物質が検出されていたことが日本テレビの取材でわかった。

Nippon Television's investigation has revealed that the radioactive materials in very high concentration, 170,000 becquerels per kilogram, had been found in the sewage slag from a sewage treatment facility in Tokyo.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan government, 170,000 becquerels per kilogram radiation was detected in the sewage slag sample taken on March 25 at Tobu Sludge Plant, a sewage treatment facility in Koto-ku. The samples taken at two additional facilities also showed radiation over 100,000 becquerels per kilogram. The slag has already been recycled into cement and other construction materials.

 国は、12日になって福島県に対しては一キロあたり10万ベクレルを超える汚泥は県内で焼却するなどした上で、焼却灰は容器に入れて保管すべきとの指針を出したが、福島県以外に対する基準は現在もない。

The national government issued a guidance on May 12 as to how to dispose the radioactive sludge and slag in Fukushima Prefecture, which is to burn the sludge and store the burned sludge (slag) in containers. However, there is no such standard for radioactive sewage treatment outside Fukushima Prefecture.

In comparison, the sewage slag from Koriyama City in Fukushima measured 334,000 becquerels per kilogram, and Koto-ku is 225 kilometers away from Fukushima I Nuke Plant.

In the latest test (done on May 10-12), the result for the slag at the Koto-ku facility was lower, at 18,470 becquerels/kg (cesium-134 and cesium-137). Instead, the treatment facility in Edogawa-ku (east of Koto-ku) tested high radiation at 53,200 becquerels/kg.

And the highly radioactive sludge in Fukushima is to be burned. That's just great. According to Sankei News, the national government will allow the radioactive sludge and slag with low radiation (few thousands becquerels per kilogram) to be used as cement materials, as before, as long as the radioactive materials are diluted enough to the level that has no immediate effect on health. Between 10,000 becquerels/kg and 100,000 becquerels/kg, they should be put in a temporary storage. The government guideline doesn't say what will happen when the temporary storage becomes full.

This problem is just going to continue to magnify....I just can't imagine the endpoint to this....

Robbie001 sez:

This goes along with the new story over at falloutphilippines.

"The government has discovered thousands of cases of workers at nuclear power plants outside Fukushima Prefecture suffering from internal exposure to radiation after they visited the prefecture, the head of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said."

"The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said it received the data from power companies across the country that measured the workers' internal exposure to radiation with "whole-body counters" and recorded levels of 1,500 counts per minute (cpm) or higher. In 1,193 cases, workers had internal exposure to radiation of more than 10,000 cpm. Those workers had apparently returned to their homes near the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant or had moved to other nuclear power plants from the Fukushima No. 1 and 2 nuclear power plants."

Man is destined to destroy himself. That is the nature of the physical mind.

"Man is destined to destroy himself. That is the nature of the physical mind".

Zionist propaganda.

They've been pushing that crap for years to deflect blame...as always.

Overthrow them !

To those who say, "Man is destined to destroy himself." Go ahead and drop dead. You are right. You don't matter.
Given the incredibly mental gone-wrong behavior of the Japanese government on this Fukushima matter, one may safely conclude that stacking the vote in Japan has a more extensive history since WWII than vote fraud in America. That would be from entities loyal to an element of the military occupiers instead of Japan. Much like the CFR here in America being loyal to BP, the cabal that pulled off 9-11, the JFK assassination, etc..

A note on units: 1 becquerel = 1 atomic disintegration per second, or count per second given a perfect detector. 100000 becquerels = 2.7 Curies = 2.7 grams of radium. 170000 becquerels = 4.6 grams radium equivalent - and that's in just 1kg of sludge. That is unbelievably hot.

And it's mostly cesium, which replaces calcium in your bones if any gets ingested and stays there for the rest of your life.(50% remains after 30 years). 120 milligrams of this 170kBq/kg sludge ingested would equal the annual 5 rem /50 millisievert yearly nuclear worker exposure limit, assuming the contamination is from cesium-137. (2.4mg for the 0.1rem civilian limit). 2.5 grams would put you in the hospital with radiation sickness. An ounce would incapacitate you within an hour and likely kill you within a few days even with treatment.

Radiation falls off with the square of distance, but that works in reverse, too. Any radioactives in the body have only a micron from them to the nearest DNA, making them at over a trillion times more dangerous than they would be at a distance of a meter.

Oops - I didn't see that "e-6" after the numbers on my units calculator. All the calculations above are off by a factor of a million. You'd have to eat 2.4kg of the sludge to get to the civilian 1mSv limit. So don't do that.

what types of construction material was this "slag" made into, and where is the destination of the material that was made?!!?!

Why is it I think that this will end up being a more lethal variation to the Chinese drywall debacle?!

A discussion about how this sewage sludge in Tokyo would be appreciated. Did this sewage sludge come from the processing of Tokyo only waste? How did this radioactivity get into the Tokyo sludge? Was it from rain water and wind transfered radioactive matter, or was it from a river water and underground water route from Fukushima?

how it got there is probably not known and that's why there is no mention of it. My guess would be underground through the water. Those cores are probably pretty deep into the ground by now. I live in nevada and we get radiation in the air that is high enough to be what used to be an unsafe level, but I guess it's safe now since safety limits have been raised. Sad thing is I have not met a single person that I have asked about the debacle that knows anything about it or is worried/taking precautions. It's pretty much a media blackout here in the US. Just 1 of those cores doing what they are doing is worse than chernobyl, and we got 3. But since most people I know also think I'm a conspiracy nut I'm really not at all surprised about their ignorance on the subject. Some of them are beginning to wake up though as the things I say are going to happen always do... Its a little late though, probably the same situation here..

This event will still be uncontained 10 years from now. Mark my words. By then most, if not all, of Japan will be totally uninhabitable.

North Korea will probably have to be evacuated too eventally. There will be no place on earth that this won't effect in a very bad way.

Where will the very large Japanese population go? I would assume that many will end up in the US. But when Americans and the rest of the world finally wake up to the fact that the cancers that are killing them came from Japan they won't be very welcome any where. That sucks but it is true.

If you doubt my words then you are optimistically naive. 30 years have passed since the first event (Chernobyl)and we haven't even cleaned up that mess yet.

The scope of this disaster is a million times deadlier then the so called pig flu and yet every one (here in the US at least) isn't the slightest bit concerned.

Where is the CDC now?

Why aren't our politicians passing legislation to deal with this very real disaster?

Oh, that's right. Because they are all connected to the industry.

Make no mistake about it, this is the biggest nuke explosion to ever happen. It's just exploding in slow motion that's all.

My sympathy is with the people of Japan and to all the rest of the ignorant masses around the world to naive to see that this is a harbinger of death.

Heaven help us should there be a second tsunamie. Game over at that point.

This sludge is just concentrating the radioactivity that contaminated the people in the Tokyo area !!
a big part of these nuclei passed in a human intestine, acknowledging the widespread contamination of the population.

I feel very sad for Japan... Japan should stop now and forever to use this criminal energy source, and start an open and realistic plan to contain the remaining fuel in Fukushima I !!
