#Fukushima I Nuke Plant: 510,000Bq/kg of Radioactive Cesium from Greenling Inside the Plant Harbor


TEPCO announced (link in Japanese) on February 28, 2013 that a greenling caught inside the harbor of Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant on February 17, 2013 was found with 510,000 becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium, highest ever tested in fish since the start of the nuclear accident.

  • Cesium-134: 180,000 becquerels/kg

  • Cesium-137: 330,000 becquerels/kg


In January 2013, a spotbelly rockfish inside the harbor was found with 254,000 becquerels/kg of cesium.

A Pacific cod, caught in the same location as the 510,000 Bq/kg greenling (near the harbor mouth), had only 130 becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium. Greenling is a bottom-dweller, while Pacific cod isn't.

Surely Tepco tested more than one fish.

So was this particular fish the lowest tested or the highest? The article's tone indicates the highest, but there is no data to back this up. This could be the average of a lot of tested fish.

They could have tested 50 fish, and this was the lowest of the lot., with the highest being 1 million bq/kg, or 10 million. Without the source data we cannot tell.

This is Tepco manipulation at its finest. The reporters need to demand to see the source data rather than relying on a carefully crafted press release.

This is the highest they have reported so far. In this batch they tested around 120 samples. You have the link with the results on the article, by the way.

Well, ceasium is a bitch at certain concentrations and will kill people either quickly or slowly, all depending. I feel the same way about measuring--what's the point? As time moves on there is more and more contamination everywhere caused by numerous countries using this technology. How does one stop it? I hate to say it but the Fukushima disaster was not dire enough and unfortunately the average bloke doesn't understand it anyway.
Sad.

What's the point of measuring? So that we know at least, so that we gather data if that's all we can do.

I don't understand why that person thinks cesium 137 lasts 20,000 years, though. Technically it lasts forever, half life after half life after half life after ... ad infinitum.

Well, after 60 years Cs-137 would have only decayed to around 25% of what they are detecting now, so for those of us alive today it's almost the same 20,000 or forever.

Cs-134 would be almost irrelevant 6-8 years from now though.
